About

My fascination with photography was born in the late 70’s when I purchased my first “real” 35mm SLR camera shortly after enlisting in the US Navy at the age of 17. I made my purchase from the “ship’s store” on a whim while we were out at sea. I have three-ring binders full of Kodachrome 35mm color slides and color negatives from my travels to the Mediterranean region including La Maddalena, Sardinia; Rome; Naples; Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Split, Croatia (then Yugoslavia). These memories are among my most treasured keepsakes. After my enlistment in the Navy, and once semi-settled back in my hometown, I converted a tiny spare bathroom into a darkroom where I taught myself how to develop black and white film and print my own images. Manual focus and film photography was the norm for a number of years. I soon upgraded to the flagship Nikon F3 equipped with the MD-4 motor drive and my bag was full of Nikkor AI-S “glass”. I had it going on! I was fortunate enough to become good friends with a couple of local professional photographers who on occasion, let me shoot for them and use their studios and medium format gear (Hasselblad, Mamiya, Bronica) which only fueled my passion for image perfection.

And then came auto focus lenses and not far behind, digital sensors. Game changer, although I was very skeptical for a good while. I finally stepped over into the digital age and through the years I have stayed with Nikon, currently shooting with the 46 megapixel Z9 and D850 bodies using Nikon lenses exclusively. Recently, I have added medium format digital capabilities to the studio with the amazing 100 megapixel Hasselblad X2D-100C.
